Insulating Mats -A personal protection equipment against electrical threats

Due to the possibility of electrical leakage, workers are open to the opportunity for an electrical shock.

Electrical insulation mats decrease such probability to a great extent.

There are different ways the electrical personnel is exposed to an electrical threat, such as:

  • Direct contact with electricity
  • Indirect contact with electricity
  • An arcing caused due to exposed electric wiring
  • An explosion caused by an electrical fault.
  • Physical harm caused by electrical flame.
  • Release of electrical toxins due to circuit failures
  • A fire caused due to faulty electrical equipment.

Therefore, the possibility of a threat is always present, and it may come unnoticed.

A proper precautionary set up should be maintained when working in such an environment.

Electrical insulation mats help in maintaining a safe work environment.

Some of the common area that insulation comes most handy is:

  • Mining
  • Munitions
  • Heavy machinery
  • Engineering sites
  • Utility sites
  • Construction sites

Other than this, some of the typical stationary applications include:

  • Near switchboards
  • Near LT and HT panels
  • Near electrical panels
  • Inside control rooms
  • Against High Voltage generating rooms
  • Near Machine control rooms

The insulated rubber mats are manufactured according to ISO 9001:2015, which qualify the safety standards for electrical protection.

Additionally, the carpets are manufactured according to the IS 15652 standard for India and ASTM D 178 and IEC 61111 standard for global distribution.

The mats are tested to specifications their commitment to electrical safety, such as:

  • Flame rating test
  • Arcing resistivity test
  • Relative thermal index
  • Chemical compatibility test
  • Full thermal aging test

These electrical mats have become the base for protection against most electrical units.

It is a crucial life-saving asset for workers who are exposed to high voltage situations.

These high voltage insulation mats are manufactured from a perfect blend of synthetic polymers.

Due to their tight bonding of electrons with their atoms, the electrical discharge is restricted extensively.

The particles in the rubber molecule are tightly bound, making the electrons firm with its atom.

The electrons cannot be shared with its neighboring atoms which make electricity to slow down.

The displaced electric ion eventually stops within the surface of the mat, making it the ideal candidate for organizational safety.

This is because of the strong dielectric properties exhibited by the mats towards electricity.

The insulation mats are more effective when grounded to the earth in an electrical outlet.

In this way, the excess electrons are returned to earth, creating a stable working environment.

However, the insulating mats need to discharge at a lower rate, a connecting resistor to the carpets should do the trick.

The high voltage insulating mats have become a popular choice due to their unique mechanical and chemical capabilities.

Some of its unique features include:

  • It is highly electrical resistive. The dielectric property of the mats stops the flow of the electron within its surface.

  • The electrical insulation mats show a high abrasive property. It can withstand high load pressure without losing its mechanical capabilities.

  • Insulation mats are slip-resistant. The workers can walk on the surface without the worry of falling and injuring themselves. In the case of an accidental slip, the mat surface provides sufficient friction to walk about with a fall or slide.

  • Insulating mats show optimal performance in high-temperature conditions. Even at extreme heat or cold conditions, the mats perform splendidly.

  • Insulating mats have a high resistivity towards oil, acid, and alkalis. In addition to being inactive to chemical exposure, the rug remains chemically inert when exposed to ultraviolet radiation.

  • Electrical mats are incredibly flame retardant.

  • The mats are easily maintainable without any supervision.

  • The electrical rubber mats can be cut, designed, and fit to any desired space.

To keep our clients happy, the mats are available for customization in different colors and design symmetry.

Use Electrical Insulating Mats and Be Safe from Any Kind of Electric Shocks!

Be it at your workplace or home the very first thing that comes to mind while making sure that someone is safe at a place, is by ensuring the fact that the place is properly insulated.

However, although you pay extra attention that your house is insulated it is only natural for someone to not pay as much attention in order to be sure that their workplace is properly insulated.

Electrical insulating mats are one way of making sure that both your house and workplace is adequately insulated.

However, like everything else in life there is a catch.

Although it might sound all rosy and easy to have a place insulated, specialists and experts are needed to do the task properly.

Therefore, let us look at the installation process of an insulating rubber mat:

Equipments required:

  1. Insulating mats
  2. Roller
  3. Adhesive
  4. Brush
  • Make the floor ready

Any moisture or trapped air should be done away with. Furthermore, it is of utmost importance that you make the floor absolutely level and devoid of any cracks.

If there are any cracks present, it should be properly leveled using appropriate filling.

A protective coat of water-proofing can be used to make sure that the surface of both the mat and the sub-floor are dry.

  • Apply adhesives

The adhesive that experts recommend using is the Fevicol SR 998. It is the safest adhesive to go for mainly because it does not interfere with the process of installation and does not affect the features of electrical rubber mats.

Apply the recommended adhesive on both the floor and your insulating mat and wait for 10 minutes approximately.

The main purpose of doing this is to ensure the perfect attachment of the mat with the floor.

  • Place your mat

This one is probably the trickiest part of the entire installation process. Not only does it require a steady set of hand but it needs the person carrying out the task to have excellent eyesight.

Be sure to spread the mat evenly along the surface of your workplace or home.

  • Use roller

This is primarily done to ensure that there is no trace of trapped air or moisture is left between the insulating mat and your floor.

Leave it at least for a week to dry, and do not worry if there are no roller at your disposal. Regular weights can be used to carry out the task as well.

But why bother with insulating mats at all?

The answer is as straightforward as the question itself. The simple reason why so much importance is given to Insulation mats  is for the protection of the workers at a workplace.

Here are some other pointers for the importance that is given:

  • Personnel working with and around electrical appliances are very much inclined towards getting injured from shocks.

Having a mat that insulates the workplace not only acts as a floor covering but it also, more importantly, protects these personnel from any sort of mishap while working in the generator room or in a substation.

  • As days go by more and more industries are becoming mechanized. And in most cases the equipment used is becoming more and more complex.

However, irrespective of these complexities an insulating mat will always protect the workers from any kind injuries which might in some cases maybe fatal as well.

  • It offers a better working infrastructure for everyone.
  • It has become mandatory for these industries to provide total protection to each and every one of its personnel, especially to those who work with live electrical equipments.

Therefore, it can be expected that after going through this blog you will have all the necessary knowledge about insulating mats and its importance!
